Rough Trade 40th Anniversary Event

ROUGHTRADE.COM
40TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS

It’s a story that has become as well known as the name itself - in 1976 Geoff Travis opened a record shop called Rough Trade in West London and the musical culture in the UK would be changed forever. From a revolutionary amalgam of distribution company, record shop and label have sprung 40 years of independent music from the likes of The Smiths, Stiff Little Fingers, The Raincoats, The Fall, The Strokes, The Libertines, Anohni and Warpaint.

Throughout, Rough Trade in all its manifestations has existed and thrived through a culture of collaboration and co-operation, and these 40th Anniversary events, curated alongside the 40th Anniversary Journal published earlier in the year, see some of the most important, treasured, and innovative artists come together to plan a series of collaborative events in some of London’s best venues. These events presented by Eat Your Own Ears promise to be genuine one-off performances, and true testaments to all that is most exciting in music.

Saturday 22nd October
THE BARBICAN

John Grant + Wrangler (Feat. Stephen Mallinder)
Scritti Politti & Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip)
Pop Group & Protomartyr

Opening the series of events is a night of collaborations at the Barbican, alongside pop up and spoken word performances, a Rough Trade shop and some afternoon sessions as part of the Battle of Ideas festival.

Ten Fe | Aldous RH | shame

London Duo Ten Fé make darkly romantic electronic rock and roll and have been described as ‘wonderfully refined’; they will be joined by Manchester band Aldous RH, the alter ego of ex Egyptian Hip Hop singer Alexander, who creates blurry blue eyed soul and blissful ballads.

We’re also thrilled to add shame to the bill at Rough Trade East.

Josh T. Pearson | Duke Garwood & Smoke Fairies | Adam Chetwood & Will Burns

An evening we hope will show off the rude health of music made with the apparently simple mechanics of voice and guitar, pushing the boundaries of the rough folk traditions of both the UK and America into new, exciting, literate spaces. And all in one of our favourite venues.

Happy Meal Ltd. | Goat Girl | Boys Forever

Mysterious south London bands Happy Meal Ltd and Goat Girl join up for the second Rough Trade in-store. They’ve both been causing a stir on the live circuit and we’re excited to see them again! Patrick Doyle, aka Boys Forever, released his debut album this August. It is a tumultuous collection of splintering pop songs, underpinned by acid tongue lyrics and shivering vitriol.
